Ten Vocaloid Songs You Need To Know

This list is inspired, partially, by my love for musicals and those songs you just know even if you’ve never really sat down and listened to it. Or you know the songs without realizing it was a musical song originally.

It’s not just musical theater, but every musical fanbase has those songs that you should know, and even people who aren’t fans know these songs. It’s the songs you’ll have shoved in your face by the most vocal fans. However, these songs are also the ones that you shouldn’t mention unless you want to be called something like a “fake fan”.

This list won’t have any of the lesser-known Vocaloids because of how famous these songs are. And, I’ll mention it here, I will not have any cover songs (Ievan Polka and Electric Angel by Rin and Len, for example), so don’t expect those types of songs on this list. This list will also look like a list that a Vocaloid fan stuck in like 2012 would make.

As always, there will be links to the NND upload and the YT official upload if there is one.

10. Daughter of Evil/Servant of Evil (feat. Kagamine Rin/Kagamine Len) by Akuno-P

The reason I decided these two should be together, although I never really combine songs like this, is because they’re connected. They’re mirrors; the songs are different points of view of the same story. It’s also very likely if you know one song, you’ll soon encounter the other. You can’t really hear one song without hearing the other, as there’s information in there that expands on the meaning. (Also, never look at the comments in Vocaloid videos. There’s probably going to be a mention of this song or a roleplay involving the plot points of this song.)

9. Cendrillon (feat. Hatsune Miku, KAITO) by Signal-P

It’s a dark fairytale song. It’s vaguely reminiscent of Cinderella, and there is an opera of the same name (Cendrillon) based off the fairytale of Cinderella. The French version of Cinderella, I should specify. When the clock strikes twelve, Miku has to kill KAITO, the prince, and she moves in the ball to do that. However, when they dance, they fall in love, and she is conflicted on what to do. It’s pretty easy to see how this song became popular within the fandom. It’s also pretty fast, and that fits with the theme of time is going by, and Miku needs to come to a decision by that time.

8. Meltdown (feat. Kagamine Rin) by iroha(sasaki)

This is one of Rin’s most popular songs. It’s a song about a nuclear reactor, and it might also be about growing up. The video seems to hint that, at the very least. Speaking of popularity, this song was taken down because of how it kept appearing in the top rankings of NND because of cheating, and then uploaded to someone else’s channel (which is why the link does not go to iroha(sasaki)’s channel.) I think this might be the song this producer is known for (although I prefer “sigh” to “Meltdown”.)

7. Matryoshka (feat. Hatsune Miku, GUMI) by Hachi

It’s a nonsense song. There seems to be no link between the lyrics. It looks like nonsense, and it probably has no deeper meaning. There is a theory of it being a descent in madness, which fits the song well, but it’s just a theory. This song is known for its inspiration in art that people make. Trust me, you’ll recognize art done in the “Matryoshka” style. (As an aside, the art is done by the producer of the song; most, if not all, of his songs have art done by him.) Hashiyan’s and Zebra’s version is as popular, if not more so, than the original.

6. Mozaik Role (feat. GUMI) by Deco*27

It’s a GUMI song, and I like GUMI. It’s about battling your demons, and coming across “you” but not “you.” That’s a subject I like hearing about in music. It’s not a bad song, and personal opinions aside (that aren’t wholly positive), it deserves to be well-known in the community. I had to choose between this song and “Coward Montblanc” by the producers. I had decided on “Mozaik Role” because it was the first song to come to mind when I was thinking about Deco*27. I would definitely recommend listening to GUMI’s version, and maybe looking at covers.

5. Heat-Hazed Days (feat. Hatsune Miku) by Jin

It could alternatively be known as “Heat-Hazed Daze”, but I’m going with “Heat-Hazed Days” because that’s how I’ve come to know the song. Hopefully this doesn’t get me a death warrant, but I don’t like this song because Miku’s too high. However, that aside, it is Jin’s most popular work, and it was also the first song I heard by him. I admit I haven’t delved into all of the Kagerou Project‘s songs, but the handful I did listen to, this one stuck with me the most. It also has many Utaite covers, and I recommend listening to those covers over listening to the original.

4. Rolling Girl (feat. Hatsune Miku) by wowaka

Mou ikkai, mou ikkai” is probably the line most memorable to me. Imagine just thinking “once more, just once more” to yourself. It’s a song about pushing ahead, for me. It’s a song about perserverance, and it fits that this song is popular and well-known in the community. Every community needs a song to lift them up when they feel down. However, it could also be about a “rolling girl” who deals with suicidal thoughts, so there’s that theory, too.

3. Senbonzakura (feat. Hatsune Miku) by Kurousa-P

You might recognize the title because Lindsey Stirling covered this song. You might think of Bleach. Whatever it is, this song title stands out. It’s a song about the Westernization of Japan. It can be dark at time (I had to look it up, but the ICBM is a missle.) But it’s also a song that managed to stay in the NND rankings for a long time. There’s really nothing else to say other than that it deserves it spot in the rankings, and I hope that it continues to be in the top 100 Vocaloids songs in NND’s rankings.

2. World is Mine (feat. Hatsune Miku) by ryo

I’ll open with this opinion: I don’t like this song. I listened to it, fully, once, and never again. Despite all of that, I know how it goes. In a “Guess the Vocaloid Song” video, I can guess this song easily. It’s recognizable, it’s famous (by that, I mean I’ve seen it performed for karaoke at an anime convention, which is neither here nor there), and I know the lyrics to the beginning two lines. I wish I didn’t. This song is a good example of why people think Vocaloids are high-pitched.

1. Magnet (feat. Hatsune Miku, Megurine Luka) by minato

This song is first partially because of my bias (see World is Mine for my opinion) and partially because I feel this song is more recognizable for its art. Those fanarts of two people wearing butterfly headphones and singing to each other? That’s from this song. It’s a forbidden love song, and who doesn’t love that? (The answer is supposed to be no one, but I’m certain there’s someone sick of that trope.) Also, there was this big controversy behind the artist for this video (and Just Be Friends), so that made it even bigger.
